Singing the Praises of Underberg

I’m currently really enjoying reading Bitters: A Spirited History of a Classic Cure-All, with Cocktails, Recipes, and Formulas by cocktail genius Brad Thomas Parsons.

Mixed in with the  history of bitters is a two-page spread toting the wonders of Underberg, a German digestive bitters I had never heard of, but which sounded amazing. Before leaving for our honeymoon, I picked up a little 3-pack of the tiny bottles at the Whole Foods near our house. We popped open a bottle after a particularly gregarious meal on Lana’i and were immediately hooked on the magical get out of overindulgence free properties of the digestive.

Served in little 20ml bottles, Underberg is meant to be a post-dinner tonic that enhances the feeling of well being but the taste is pretty hard to explain. My recommendation, hunt it down and try it after your next special dinner. Let us know what you think if you try it out!

  1. Underberg, the über tonic for all that ails you!
I carry a small box with 2 bottles of the wondrous elixir in my camera bag… umm, for restorative purposes!
It is great after a particularly rich meal (think Thanksgiving in the US), as well as being helpful as a stomach settler.
    German engineering in a bottle… 🙂
